In every newsletter I read, the message of outsourcing is prominent. In the past I have hired independent contractors to help me with projects or administrative tasks. I have had both good luck and bad luck with this endeavor. One of my independent contractors worked with me for almost two years. Another never showed up for his first day.

As I look at my to-do list, I know I need to outsource some tasks. A business associate provided me with a referral for a virtual assistant (VA). I have clarity on how the VA can help my business. The challenge I’m faced with is the time frame in which I will want projected completed. The reason I am a little worried is because the VA is working as a consultant for one company and her schedule appears to be somewhat inflexible.

In general, I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt and recognize that sometimes deadlines are missed. I take into consideration that I am not their only client and they have a personal life as well. Also, sometimes it is difficult to build a working relationship via electronic communications only when we all work and play on different schedules.

What has been your experience with your VA? Is it more of a hassle than it is worth or do they make your life a whole lot easier?
